And why is emotional literacy important at work?

Trends in business indicate the importance of emotional intelligence in organizations. According to the Top 5 leadership trends in 2024, published by Forbes, emotional intelligence is among the top five. Leaders who are aware of  their emotions and the emotions of others, who know to recognize their emotion and how to express their emotions and use emotions in interaction with others to solve challenging situations, have better dynamics within the team and within the organization and encourage cooperation.

In addition to trends related to AI, HR, flexible working hours and skills development, employee experience in the workplace and their perception of well-being continue to be at the top of the trends for HR 2024 (Forbes, Gallup, LinkedIn). In order for employees to have that experience, it is not enough for HR to provide healthy snacks, interesting gadgets or some kind of activations.

It is necessary for leaders to be able to recognize the needs of employees, and to be able to respond to situations in which emotions inevitably appear. According to Gallup’s 2024 Trends Survey, the stress people experience at work is at a record high following the pandemic. Although there is a tendency for employee commitment to gradually increase, the level of stress employees feel at work is also increasing.

What does experience say?

Experience shows that people leave leaders, not the company. At a time when it is difficult to find employees who will stay in the system long enough to make a difference, having leaders and employees who are emotionally literate has a significant impact on building belonging and retaining employees. To build trust in a team, it’s helpful to consider how emotionally available and connected leaders are to employees.

When we work in an environment where we approach each other from a position of respect and understanding, chances are high that conflict situations will be learning opportunities and that we will quickly resolve them and get back to work.

A high degree of self-awareness and emotional intelligence contributes to building good relationships and a good reputation at work.

Emotional literacy or emotional intelligence?

Steiner made an interesting review of the difference between emotional intelligence and emotional literacy. According to this author, emotional literacy is emotional intelligence with a heart.

This means that emotional literacy is aimed at improving people’s lives, encouraging them to focus on personal strengths in development and build their skills from there.

There are at least five skills that help us develop our emotional literacy:

How to develop emotional literacy?

To develop emotional literacy, we first need to work on our own capacity to recognize our emotions. Some people know how to recognize their emotions and talk about them. There are many more who do not have such an understanding of their emotions. The first step in developing emotional literacy is increasing emotional awareness, that is, our skills to recognize our emotions in a situation and find the words that best describe our emotional experience.

By developing emotional awareness, our capacity to feel empathy for other people’s emotions increases. Once we have experienced what it’s like to be sad or happy at work and how to use those emotions in a constructive way, the chances are higher that we will also notice the reactions of other people.

With the development of emotional awareness and empathy, our capacity to manage the intensity of our emotions, experience and expression in the workplace increases, which in turn increases the capacity to be constructively present when expressing other people’s emotions.

All this naturally leads to the development of the skill to talk about emotions, “emotional” interactivity, which helps to calculate emotions in our efforts to make decisions, come to a solution that is suitable for all parties involved, and build trust in the team.
